Foster Homes are Always Needed!

Are you interested in offering a safe haven for an animal at our shelter while they await their furever home? 

If so, please complete and return a Foster Application. You may e-mail your completed form or drop it off during regular business hours. 

Book Buddies Reading Program

Book Buddies is a new program designed to help our shelter animals become more adoptable through social interaction with children. Reading to the animal calms and comforts them. It also helps children improve their own reading skills. Prizes are available!

Who: Children ages 6-15

*Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult

*Children age 12 and older may stay up to 2 hours without adult supervision

*Participants are asked to complete an orientation prior to starting the program.

Where: HSL Shelter, 19665 US Hwy 59, Detroit Lakes, MN

When: Wednesday through Friday, 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 12:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Volunteer Orientation

We ask that all volunteers attend a volunteer orientation and complete a volunteer application. We have an online form Volunteer Application or you may download our Volunteer Application and e-mail or return it to the shelter. 

Volunteer Orientation is held monthly. Please check our Calendar of Events or call the shelter for the date and time.
